EXPRESSIONISM reproductions

Expressionism is a subjective form of art which is applied to 20th century artists who took their inspiration, in large, from Evard Munch and Vincent van Gogh’s works. The Expressionist movement generally began in 1914 although there are no clear guidelines as to where it ended due to it’s progressive nature.
The two major groups of the Expressionist movement where Die Brucke (Dresden, Germany) and Der Blaue Reiter ( Munich, Germany). The movement later developed into Abstract Expressionism and paved the way for numerous Modern art movements.
Expressionists use primary colours and strong compositions in order to remove themselves from the somewhat romanticised images depicted by the Impressionists. The paintings capture emotions and aim to be subjective not realistic representations of what the artist sees.
Among the influential members of the Expressionist era are Wassily Kandinsky ( the founder of Der Blaue Reiter, who later moved to Abstraction), Egon Schiele, Oscar Kokoschka and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (one of the founding members of Die Brucke).
