BAROQUE reproductions

The Baroque era began sometime at the beginning of the 17th century in Rome, Italy. It was elaborate, dramatic and grand. The style was supported greatly by the Roman Catholic Church, therefore many paintings of the era depict emotional religious scenes.
The greatest artist of the Baroque movement is thought by many to be Paul Rubens. An important Italian painter of this era was Caravaggio, while in the Netherlands Vermeer was undoubtedly the greatest artist of his ilk at the time.
Baroque was formed in reaction to the strict Renaissance style and later evolved to become the more decorative Rococo style.
